Maeheon Citizen’s Forest

Maeheon Citizen's Forest is the first park in Korea to introduce the forest concept and is a park with a dense forest that is difficult to find in the city. It was created as a park in 1986 to improve the environment around Yangjae Toll Gate, which was the gateway to Seoul at the time, ahead of the 1986 Asian Games and 1988 Olympics. The park is planted with 250,000 trees of 70 species, including pine trees, zelkova trees, maple trees, horse chestnut trees, and pine trees. The area to the north of Maeheon-ro contains the Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Memorial Hall, a floor fountain, and a children's playground, so many families visit for outings with their children. In the southern section, there is the guerrilla White Horse Unit's Chunghon Tower, the memorial tower for Korean Air Flight 858, which was blown up by North Korean terrorism over the Andaman Strait in Myanmar in 1987, the memorial tower built to comfort the victims and their families who died in the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995, and the Umyeonsan Mountain landslide victims' memorial monument. In particular, District 3 of Maeheon Citizen's Forest was created by Seocho-gu as a culture and arts park, and consists of a play yard, an outdoor performance hall, various special exhibition halls, a sculpture park, and a meeting plaza. Performances and exhibitions are held here, making it a new attraction in Seocho-gu, which boasts an autonomous cultural district. Each space creates a unique atmosphere, making it a space that is much loved by citizens.
