Steps

  1. 01

Search the last secure location without exposing other valuables.

  2. 02

Record when and where the passport was last seen.

  3. 03

Report the loss to police when the embassy or local procedure requires it.

  4. 04

In the embassy directory, use Search under Foreign Missions in ROK for your nationality. Use that mission’s Telephone No., email and address; state the lost passport, departure date and location, and ask about an emergency travel document, appointment, photos, identification and any required police report. At weekends, use the consular emergency contact on that embassy’s official site. Ask 1345 separately about Korean immigration procedures; it does not issue foreign passports. If the address is in Seoul and Telephone No. has only 7–8 digits without an area code, prefix 02 within Korea or +82-2 overseas. Do not add a second area code to an already complete number.

  5. 05

Prepare identification photos, copies, report, and travel proof as requested.

  6. 06

Update the airline and immigration plans only after the replacement timeline is clear.

Before you start

  • Store a passport copy and passport number separately.
  • Save the embassy or consulate contact.
  • Keep flight and visa details accessible without the passport.

Easy points to confuse

  • Posting a full passport image publicly
  • Booking replacement travel before embassy guidance
  • Assuming a photocopy is a travel document

Practical example

Example: after a Friday-night loss, check the embassy's emergency contact and next opening time rather than assuming Monday is the only option. Prepare the passport copy, flight, loss location, and time, and notify the airline if departure is near. 1345 operates weekdays 09:00–22:00 Korea time (UTC+9); after 18:00 only Korean, English and Chinese are available. From overseas call +82-2-6908-1345.
