Place story

Sayuksin Park occupies a high hill between the Han River pedestrian bridge and Noryangjin Station, developed as a memorial landscape around the Sayuksin tombs. The tombs commemorate six officials—Bak Paeng-nyeon, Seong Sam-mun, Yi Gae, Ha Wi-ji, Yu Seong-won, and Yu Eung-bu—who gave their lives in 1456, the second year of Sejo, while attempting to restore Danjong, Joseon's sixth king. In 1455, Danjong's uncle Grand Prince Suyang seized the throne and removed him. Angered by the usurpation, the officials plotted his restoration, but were discovered and met brutal deaths. A Confucian academy was established here in 1681, the seventh year of Sukjong, to honor their loyalty and resolve, and a memorial stele was erected in 1782, the sixth year of Jeongjo. A further Sayuksin monument was added in 1955, after which the burial grounds were expanded and renovated to commemorate loyalty and filial devotion. Originally only Bak Paeng-nyeon, Seong Sam-mun, Yu Eung-bu, and Yi Gae had graves here; graves for Ha Wi-ji, Yu Seong-won, and Kim Mun-gi were later added. A history hall explains the six officials and can be visited alongside the grounds. Cherry blossoms and other flowers bloom in spring, while summer foliage provides shade, drawing people for rest and reflection on the officials' loyalty. The park's viewpoint overlooks Seoul and also attracts visitors for its night views.
