The Han River is a river that runs through the middle of the Korean Peninsula and flows into the West Sea through Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeonggi-do, and Seoul. It is the home of our lives that has shared joys and sorrows with our people for half a thousand years of history, and it is the most representative resting park for Seoul citizens. The Namhan River, the main stream of the Han River, originates from Geomyongso, Changjuk-dong, Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do. It flows north near Hajang-myeon, Samcheok-si under the name of Goljicheon, passes through Gwangdong Dam, joins Imgecheon, which originates from Seokbyeongsan Mountain, meets Songcheon, which originates from Hwangbyeongsan Mountain in Yeoryang-ri, Buk-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, and flows to become the Joyang River. After joining Odaecheon, it flows south to become Donggang. The water quality of the Han River, which was the center of water transportation, deteriorated as full-scale industrialization progressed, but with the acquisition of the right to host the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the need for environmental improvement increased, and with the improvement of water quality and the expansion of urban infrastructure, it became a landmark symbolizing Seoul.

한강은 한반도 가운데를 가로지르는 강으로 강원도, 충청북도, 경기도, 서울특별시를 거쳐 서해로 유입하는 강이다. 반만년 유구한 역사를 우리 민족과 더불어 기쁨과 슬픔을 함께 해 온 우리 삶의 터전이며, 서울시민의 가장 대표적인 휴식공원이다. 한강의 본류인 남한강은 강원도 태백시 창죽동 검용소에서 발원한 하천으로서 삼척시 하장면 부근에서 골지천의 이름으로 북류하다가 광동댐을 지나 석병산에서 발원한 임계천과 합류해 서류, 정선군 북면 여량리에서 황병산을 발원지로 한 송천과 만나 조양강이 되어 흐르다가, 오대천과 합류한 후 남류하여 동강이 된다. 수운의 중심이었던 한강이 본격적인 산업화가 진행되면서 수질이 나빠졌지만 1988년 서울올림픽 개최권을 얻으면서 환경 개선의 필요성이 커지며 수질 개선과 함께 도시 인프라 확충으로 서울을 상징하는 랜드마크가 되었다. 지금은 한강을 중심으로 시민 휴식공원과 각종 체육시설, 수상 스키장, 요트장, 보트장, 낚시터 등을 갖추어 시민들의 오락, 휴양지로 이용되고 있다.
