Place story

At the foot of Samgaksan, also called Bukhansan, the April 19 National Cemetery commemorates those who died during the April 19 Revolution of 1960 while resisting the authorities responsible for the fraudulent March 15 election. The source records 224 people buried here. A memorial tower honors them, with a central inscription commemorating those who died for a just cause. The 135,901 m² grounds are landscaped with pine, juniper, yew, and maple trees. They include a 1,652.9 m² memorial hall and a traditional Korean wooden hall for the victims' portraits, expanded to 330.58 m². Other features include a symbolic gate, sculptures titled Roots of Democracy and Flame of Justice, a pond, paved walking paths, and outdoor seating. The source describes cherry blossoms in May, views of Samgaksan that feel both sheltered and splendid, and a striking sunset landscape.
