Place story
Amsa-dong is a Neolithic site on the Han River opposite Achasanseong Fortress and a representative site of Korean prehistory. Three cultural layers have been identified, and radiocarbon dating places the remains between 4000 and 3000 BCE. Repeated excavations uncovered more than 40 dwelling sites, associated facilities, and stone-pile features, preserving traces of people who lived by fishing and gathering around the Han River. The house floors were dug in circular or rounded-square shapes, about 5–6 m long and 70–100 cm deep. Stone-ringed hearths are visible in the centers, and entrances generally face south. There are usually four postholes, suggesting that posts at the corners supported a roof. Numerous pointed-bottom comb-pattern pottery vessels were found, along with stone axes, net sinkers, and charred acorns. Amsa-dong is an important Neolithic site of the Han River basin and is described in the source as the largest village-scale Neolithic settlement identified in Korea. Its many excavated objects provide evidence of everyday life at the time.
