Place story
This is the site of Bosingak, the bell pavilion that announced the time inside and outside the city walls. Also known as Jonggak, it received the royally bestowed name Bosingak in 1895, the thirty-second year of Gojong. First built in 1395, the fourth year of Taejo, it burned down four times and was rebuilt eight times. Seoul built the present two-story pavilion in August 1979, with five structural bays along both its east–west and north–south sides. The old Bosingak Bell, Treasure No. 2, was cast in 1468, the fourteenth year of Sejo, and originally stood at Wongaksa Temple. After the temple closed, it was moved here in 1619, the eleventh year of Gwanghaegun. The bell was rung 33 times at 4 a.m. and 28 times at 7 p.m. to signal the opening and closing of the city gates and mark the day's hours. Cracks eventually made it impossible to ring, so it is now kept in a bell pavilion at the National Museum of Korea. The present bell was newly cast with public donations in 1985 and first rung on Liberation Day that year. Every December 31, traffic around Bosingak is restricted and crowds gather for the bell-ringing ceremony welcoming the new year.
