Place story
Bongwonsa, an ancient temple with a history of a thousand years, was registered as a traditional temple in 2011. Its large outdoor Amitabha hanging painting and Buddhist bell were designated tangible cultural heritage of Seoul in July 2014. Buddhist gatherings are held regularly by the Gwaneum association, Hwaeom association, choir, and folk-painting group. Affiliated institutions include the Yeongsanjae Preservation Association, a Yeongsanjae training institute, the Korean Buddhist Yeongsanjae Preservation Association, and Okcheon Beomeum College, which teaches beompae Buddhist ritual chanting. Located within the city, Bongwonsa promotes the traditional Buddhist ritual Yeongsanjae both in Korea and abroad. Through its preservation and transmission, the temple seeks to uphold its standing as a principal center of traditional Buddhism and to be a place where Buddhist devotion can grow in everyday life.
