Subway stations, terminals, museums, parks, and public buildings are reliable places to look. Check whether the toilet is inside a paid area or a building with closing hours.

Steps

  1. 01

Use the toilet map to find a nearby building, floor and entrance, then follow 화장실 or WC signs. If unclear, use the station information desk or intercom to ask the toilet location and whether it is inside the paid area. Before crossing fare gates just to use a toilet, ask about re-entry; do not assume it is free.

  2. 02

In a station, check whether the toilet is before or after the ticket gate.

  3. 03

Ask staff ‘화장실 어디예요?’ while showing the word.

  4. 04

Follow posted instructions for toilet paper and waste.

  5. 05

Use the emergency call button only for an emergency.

  6. 06

Leave the facility clean and report a maintenance problem to staff.

Before you start

  • Save the Korean word 화장실.
  • Carry tissues for facilities with limited supplies.
  • Check accessibility needs on an official map when possible.

Easy points to confuse

  • Crossing a paid gate without asking staff
  • Assuming a park toilet stays open all night
  • Treating all waste instructions as identical

Practical example

Example: a station toilet shown on a map may be inside the paid area. Do not force the gate; show staff the toilet location and ask how to enter. For public buildings, also check opening and cleaning times.
